Charlie Hebdo

07 Jan

220px-CharliehebdoI was saddened to learn of the murder of ten twelve members (and 5 wounded) of the staff at Charlie Hebdo, a french satire magazine.  As I understand, 2 men armed with machine guns entered their building and began shooting indiscriminately.  At this point, it is believed that the assailants were Muslim extremists who were offended by the magazine’s satirical look at Mohammed.

When will extremists learn that you can not kill an idea?

My prayers go out to the families of the victims of this vile act.

Last night it took me less than a minute to switch CNN off. Their reporter was, in effect, explaining the terrorists’ actions. She said something like “They have deeply held religious beliefs and it is extremely upsetting to them to have anyone make fun of them. They also have the right of expression”.

This is so ludicrous I could not believe what I was hearing. I suppose the satirical magazine did not possess that same right.

The reply to anyone criticizing their religion or its founder is kill kill kill. I fear this is only going to get worse.

The answer to speech that you don’t like is more speech not violence.
