“Masked” is an anthology of superhero fiction that tries to recreate the feel of the golden age of comic books. The collection of authors in this anthology are all well established and successful writers; Matthew Sturges, James Maxey, Paul Cornell, Mike Carey, Mike Baron, Daryl Gregory, Gail Simone, Stephen Baker, Chris Roberson, Peter and Kathleen David, Joseph Mallozzi, Mark Chadburn, Marjorie M. Liu, Ian McDonald, and Bill Willingham.
Most of the stories were good, entertaining reads and a few were ok. All in all, I didn’t find any stories that really grabbed me. While it is an anthology of short stories, I found most of the stories to be too short.
Simone’s “Thug” tugged at the heart-strings and was one of the better stories. So very often, a superhero tale is little more than a morality play. It doesn’t take long to see where the author is going.
I had high expectations for this book, but I can only give it 3 stars out of 5. Although; having said that, this is a good way to sample authors that you may not have read before.
I received this complimentary book from Gallery Books for review purposes.
