White Tiger

by Kylie Chan
(Dark Heavens Trilogy)
( 2 out of 5 stars)

Emma is a young Australian woman who finds herself employed by an enigmatic Chinese muti-millionaire as a nanny for his daughter. In time Emma discovers that her boss John Chen is the “Dark Lord of the Northern Heavens” a Chinese god. While John Chen is in human form, his powers weaken. However; he feels the need to stay in human form to protect his daughter from demons. As you might expect, Emma trains to become a demon fighter to protect little Simone.

I expected something along the lines of  “Just remember what ol’ Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol’ storm right square in the eye and he says, ‘Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it.'”  What I got was, “I dropped my head with exasperation. ‘I like him. Really like him. It’s obvious he pretty much feels the same way, but every time we get close he pulls back.'”

What?

That’s right its more of a romance story.

I liked the Chinese gods and demons angle, but the story really wasn’t what I expected. The book is a bloated 527 pages and I had to struggle to finish it. Sadly, I enjoyed the glossary at the back of the book better than the story.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars …
