Clerics call for destruction of Egypt’s Great Pyramids

According to several reports in the Arabic media, prominent Muslim clerics have begun to call for the demolition of Egypt’s Great Pyramids—or, in the words of Saudi Sheikh Ali bin Said al-Rabi‘i, those “symbols of paganism,” which Egypt’s Salafi party has long planned to cover with wax.    Most recently, Bahrain’s “Sheikh of Sunni Sheikhs” and President of National Unity, Abd al-Latif al-Mahmoud, called on Egypt’s new president, Muhammad Morsi, to “destroy the Pyramids and accomplish what the Sahabi Amr bin al-As could not.”

Makes you feel all warm inside doesn’t it.

What is it about organised religion that it feels the need to destroy ?

  1. Newsflash: Egypt destroys its own tourism industry. Massive wave of poverty sweeps through nation.

    Film at ten.

  2. WTH? What did the pyramids ever do to them? With this kind of thinking, it’s a wonder the pyramids have survived as long as they have. It’s also sort of refreshing to know no matter where you go, people are the same. Nuts! Just hope their crazy doesn’t translate to action. Love “hypnobarb’s” comment too.

  3. Oh man, now I’m getting riled! I used to have this horrible feeling that if the wars in the Middle East got bad enough, bombs might drop on the Giza Plateau and the Valley of the Kings. It has always been an inner worry of mine. Now these Muslim dudes are sayin’ this crazy shizzle! They’d better never! *growling*

  4. I truly believe that if these senseless idiots tried to destroy the pyramids, they will end up with a revolt on their hands that they never expected.

During the last riots in Cairo, a huge bunch of people, including many students, temporarily allied with their enemies the police to save the Cairo Museum. Vandals were breaking in with a view to trashing the treasures. For a moment in time, both sides banded together to save these priceless pieces of history.

There are some things that transcend the ultimately ridiculous quarrels and inane viewpoints of mankind. The pyramids belong in that category. They belong to the ages, not to whomever happens to occupy those ancient lands for the time being. If they try to destroy them, these clerics may start something the scope of which they cannot comprehend in their little minds.
