The Devil’s Bottle is in the details

27 Jan

I’m not going to say that this is how Jason Hawes’ glass broke on his nightstand at the Stanley Hotel, but I believe the “Devil’s Bottle trick” is the method used in what I believe to be a hoax. Hawes reported a lot of “activity” that night including bangs, a “party” in his closet, a moving closet door (notice not all of the door was in camera frame), and a glass that shattered.

Sadly, I couldn’t hear the noise reported by Jason. It would have been simple for Jason or an assistant to crawl on the floor out of camera and manipulate the closet door. Having said that, I was impressed with the shattered glass.

While there may have been several ways to duplicate this illusion, I believe that the simplest way would be the “Devil’s Bottle” or “Bologna bottle”. The glass is heated, the interior is subjected to rapid cooling, resulting in a shattered bottle or glass.

Enjoy the demo of the “Devil’s Bottle”.

Strangely, this very thing happened to me when I was staying at a hotel in Denver in January. The glass of ice water at my bedside table was melting during the night and the wall heater right beside the table turned on. It startled me when it cracked and it caved in on itself.

It may have been unintentional but I smell a hoax.
